MAASTRICHT
INTERVIEW

Professor Marius Romme and Dr Sandra Escher developed the Maastricht interview in the Netherlands (hence it is named after the Maastricht University). It is a questionnaire which helps voice-hearers to understand their experiences, which then helps with finding effective coping skills and/or treatment plans.

The interview collects the following information:

  1. Aspects of the experience

  2. Characteristics of voices

  3. Personal history of voice hearing

  4. Voice triggers

  5. What voices say

  6. Influence of voices on your life

  7. Your interpretation of the origin of your voices

  8. Coping strategies

  9. Childhood experiences

  10. Medical history

  11. Social network

The Maastricht Interview generally takes about 4 x 60 min sessions, and a 4-6 page report is provided as part of the service, which can be used to inform treatment plans.

"Before  doing the ‘Maastricht Interview’ for hearing voices, I described my voices as “torturous”. Louisa invited me to attend her Voice Sanctuary. I was very scared at the thought of giving voice hearing too much energy, in case they returned, or were too painful to analyse. I didn’t want to give them power of me again. Louisa was aware of this, and by the end of Louisa’s guidance through the Maastricht Interview, and over a period of approximately five hours (in person, spanning 4 weeks), I felt like I could manage, not only the voice hearing history of mine, but the analysis of causes, with a plan to continue counselling with Louisa to confidently work on resolutions. I now feel like I can manage the reasons for voice hearing, and can analyse my story while identifying need of how to address the core of the issues."
